Kawaka
cathedral tree
Our Kawaka Tree, in the corner of the Churchyard by Vivian Street, was planted by Archbishop Philip Richardson to commemorate St Mary's Church consecration as a Cathedral in the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki on 6 March, 2010.
Our hope is that St Mary's will serve the people of Taranaki, building on the deep love the people of New Plymouth and the province have for this lovely old Church. We look to our Cathedral to be a place with wide open doors of generous hospitality - a place for everyone. We look too for a place of deep prayer, worship and engagement with the things that matter in people's lives. In this way a Cathedral for Taranaki will be far more than a vulnerable collection of stones. (Words by the Bishops of the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki (+Philip Richardson & +David Moxon)
“A Cathedral needs to be a place where boundaries are explored, where no question is too big, because no question is bigger than God.”
